About Us

Sound Women training and workshops can take place at a location of your choice or at one of the many existing community groups or venues we are already working witj, they will be accessible to our target groups, young and older women from marginalised communities which are located in the areas classified as most deprived as published in 2015 by Bristol City Council, their research listing 42 data areas (LSOAs) in the most deprived 10% in England for Multiple Deprivation. By holding workshops in these areas, we are creating opportunities to learn new skills, creating confidence through teaching new creative practices. We have experience working with both young and older women from many different backgrounds.

Podcast content can be licensed providing a new route to income for participants, helping to address the lack of opportunities in marginalised communities. New digital production skills will increase work-based opportunities for amateur podcasters & broadcasters, and podcasts will build new audiences for artists’ work, inspiring others to find channels for expression. No experience is needed. Sound Women aim to provide a platform for stories & voices rarely heard before and an opportunity to experience a stronger cultural voice globally and promoting cultural diversity and develop new platforms for a wider range of history representing, celebrating and promoting cultural heritage and communities who do not currently occupy the digital landscape. We teach how to make podcasts without any budget.

We have found that these workshops really help in areas of public speaking (presenting), literacy (script writing) and empowerment (research and storytelling). Regardless of what area of the industries participants wish to pursue, it’s more about growing in confidence and enjoying the workshops and meeting new people.

Sound Women also promote and curate vibrant musical showcases that brings forward talented and passionate female artists. From behind the scenes to centre stage, amplifying diverse voices and pushing for inclusion and equality in audio production and leadership. Most recently this included an 2-hour Takeover on the mainstage at Europe’s biggest free festival and Bristol’s biggest city event, the Bristol Harbour Festival with over 250,000 people attending. The showcase was an electrifying celebration of grassroots, inclusion and diversity featuring some of the top tier of talent in the UK including August, DJ Chiedza, Miss Faithee and all hosted by Sound Women Director Miss Divine. The event wasn’t just a musical showcase, it was a call to celebrate innovation, diversity, and change in the sound world.

Sound Women Bristol CIC aka Sound Women SW provides both training and safe spaces for women of all ages to come together for self-help, support, information exchange and development around gender equality in the sound technology, radio, audio and music industries from the streets to the boardroom. Only 23%% of all festival lineups are female led and behind the scenes there’s only 6% of women working. (As well as our own studies, surveys, these stats also backed up by Huddersfield University).

In collaboration with City of Threads team our founder of SWB, Miranda Rae developed the world’s first ever podcast toolkit for visually impaired people.

Miranda Rae

Director

From BBC Radio 5 Broadcaster to TV presenter, from mainstream commercial radio to Head of Specialist Programmes for Galaxy Radio, club DJ and music specialist to newspaper columnist, Miranda Rae certainly has more strings to her bow than most. From her teenage years Miranda has been involved in the music and media industries and has come a long way.

Miranda’s career has gone from strength to strength, specialising in her passion for radio she has incorporated TV presenting, documentaries, voice over film work and, of course, radio & podcast production. Working across all the terrestrial channels, Miranda has ensured that she has not been pigeon-holed into any one style or format. From presenting pioneering new music shows to prime-time mainstream shows to award winning documentary series.

Sharon Angela

Director

Sharon Angela FdA BA (HONS) HLTA MCMI MBA is an Advisory Board Member & Consultant, with 15+ years’ experience.

Sharon Angela advises in areas of business and finance.

She is a qualified teacher of 10+ years and is currently acting as an Advisory Board Member and will be joining the Board later in 2022.

Sharon Angela is also a Producer & Broadcaster. Her expertise in business and finance is a vital string to Sound Women’s bow. Sharon also produces and presents a weekly business show called Black 2 Business on Ujima Radio as well as a weekly breakfast show.

Miss Divine

Director

Miss Divine DJ, music artist manager, compère, broadcast journalist and media consultant for over 15 years. Beginning her career at Ujima Radio she has become a crucial member of the Ujima family. Miss Divine is now one of the Black & Green Ambassador’s. Miss Divine’s career has developed, and she is now one Sound Women SW Directors. Miss Divine specialises in training and supporting up and coming talent of all ages. She manages a variety of artists & DJ’s and has been a radio broadcaster for over 15 years presenting an array of shows.

Miss Divine has also built her career as a DJ & is also renowned for hosting events such as the mainstage at St. Paul’s Carnival and many of our city’s main events such as The Harbour Festival, The Downs Festival & many more.

Angela Mel

Director

Angel Mel Selector was born and bred in the heart and soul of the Bristol music scene. Coming from the West Country with her roots planted in Reggae, Drum & Bass and Trip Hop, later branching into other areas of underground dance music genres, such as Acid Jazz, Broken Beat and Deep and Soulful House. Referring to herself as a selector, she specialises in playing long sets where she can weave her magic. Choosing the juiciest cuts from a wide cross section of music including; Soul, Funk, Rare Groove, Boogie, Disco, Soulful & Deep Afro House, Garage, Electronica, party anthems and Club Classics. Classes herself as a chameleon as can play most genres with enthusiasm due to her diverse knowledge of music.

As well as being a professional DJ Selector, Angel Mel has worked on local radio for over eight years, from BCFM to Soul Train Radio. Currently working as a freelance Radio Presenter at BBC Radio Bristol, on the Kevin Philemon show. Alongside her regular Spread Love show, which champions women within the music industry on Ujima Radio, Tuesday’s 6-8pm.
