British Podcast Awards – Sound Women SW win Gold!

 

Sound Women SW are so incredibly proud to announce that having only just recovered from being nominated for the Oscars of radio, the ARIAS, that we won GOLD for Best Documentary Series in the prestigious British Podcast Awards for the Series ‘Our Journey’!

“With voices and stories rarely heard we found the mix of evocative music with powerful archive and contemporary interviews made for shocking
and compelling listening. That this story is yet to be told in as much detail on mainstream British radio, or any media, shows exactly the importance of this podcast.

In 2020 the Bristol Bus Boycott was bearly heard of outside of city and yet it is one of the most iconic moments in the history of Race Relations and is the Rosa Parks of the UK.  With the only documentation to be found anywhere was the incredible Pamplet by Professor Madge Dresser written in the early 1970’s called  ‘Black and White on the Buses’ was the result, which remains the key text for understanding  the history of that UK civil rights campaign and its impact.

Our Journey is a 6 part series and tells the story of the UK’s first civil rights campaign in 1963, the Bristol Bus Boycott. It broadcast across a network of over 40 radio stations around the UK. In the series we hear from experts about the impact and significance the Bristol Bus Boycott had then and today. As well as original activists Roy Hackett, Dr Paul Stephenson, Guy Bailey and Barbara Dettering, the series features contributions from the post WWII Caribbean & African pioneers and settlers, describing their compelling journeys and telling the often shocking stories of their arrival and first years in the UK.
